Dr. Ted here! I used to believe when I was setting a goal, it had to be definite, precise, timely, attainable, believable, and reachable. It had to be pictured with the specificity of a NASA launch and as precise as a fine Swiss watch ticking. What I’ve come to learn is that we can feel or grope around for the goal!
A goal isn’t something that needs to be pinned down so tightly as to stifle the possibilities of loftier ambition. For example, if my goal was to have a new Rolex watch, and the path was to focus on the watch, the band, the movement, the color, the weight of the metal, the snap of the clasp, and the crystal face, then I would maybe be selling myself short.
Here’s why: What if there was an even better watch out there? One I hadn’t seen yet?
So now, rather than go with what I currently know, I choose to open the door to new, endless possibilities for my success. I set my goals by something other than physical. I search for a goal that serves my greater good and allows for even my own shortsightedness. And I have found this goal resides deep within a feeling. To access a broader goal than the Rolex, I searched to discover how I felt about the watch rather than its characteristics. And, certainly, the feeling I had when speaking of the watch is much more valid and important than the watch itself. And, deep within these feelings lies the key to reaching my goals.
As it turns out, I wasn’t as excited about the watch as I was about the feeling it gave me. It was a feeling of accomplishment, a proud feeling, a feeling of success. And when I was able to capture this feeling regularly, my dreams couldn’t pass me by!
So, to review, I reset my goal to focus on the feeling I felt when thinking about the watch rather than the watch itself. Once I began to resonate with the feeling of excitement, everything started to fall into place for me. I was attracting unlimited success directly into my life, and it completely surpassed the watch.
